There are many factors that determine the quality of furniture; an example of this is upholstery, materials, and construction. However, one of the most important components in a piece of furniture design is the spring system. The Spring system is often found in the main body of the furniture piece, covered with padded material to provide a comfortable rest. They provide shock absorption along with resilience and firmness. The right spring system will result in a prolonged life in the furniture you select. This guide hopes to show you the different kinds of spring systems that are used at J&B Furniture and why we use them, as each system provides a different purpose.

Pocket springs system
A Pocket spring system is an individual spring placed in small pockets of cloth, that is inserted under the padding of the cushion. The individual springs allow for some extra movement in the cushioning of the sofa or mattress. A larger number of springs usually translates to more comfort. The construction of the Pocket spring gives consistency to its support and firmness. The Pocket spring system in seating tends to hold its shape and support better over time, making it the choice for those who prioritize long-lasting furniture. If you’re looking to make an investment in a sofa or mattress that you want to last for a long time, a pocket spring will be a great choice.

Bonnell spring systems

The Bonnell spring system is considered to be one of the more traditional interior spring systems. The Bonnell spring system uses hour-glass-shaped coils with rounded tops and is interconnected with a mesh of metal to make the spring system. The coils used in the mattresses prevent any wear and tear. These springs have a considerable amount of space between them providing excellent air circulation which reduces the build-up of heat and promotes better comfort. The Bonnell spring system is often paired with a zig-zag spring system and is placed middle and/or lower layers of the furniture, usually below a comfort layer of cotton, wool, or foam. This spring system provides springiness, with reduced sag, and a medium firmness perfect for weight baring furniture.

Wavy spring system
The Wavy spring system is a compression-based spring system. A key advantage of using a Wavy spring is in the axial space savings as they are more compact and have a 50% reduced height. Whether it is a static or dynamic application, wave springs may be the ideal solution where space is a constraint. However, the difference between a Wavy spring and a coil spring isn’t just the height. A Wavy spring can provide the same force and deflection as a coil spring but in considerably less axial space but can come in a variety of shapes pending on the task they are needed for. This makes the spring lighter and more versatile for space and placement in a piece of furniture. Overall, this system provides an accurate and predictable that can provide the same force as the traditional coil spring with more options for your furniture.
